I’m generally okay with the low tech sounds, I think it adds to the atmosphere of the game, like the ships, while in the future, and futuristic in some ways, are also kind of cobbled together, with components and technology that maybe didn’t originate with spaceships. Rather than a Star Trek type of ship where everything looks shiny and new and works perfectly every time (assuming it is free of tribbles, nanomachines, sentient holodeck programs, etc.), you are in a used one-man freighter that you take care of and maintain yourself. It has monitors hanging in random places, thick-gauge cables running through hallways and living areas, your super-efficient fusion reactor is controlled by by the same type of antique-style throw switch that controls your only window’s shutters. Heck, your power monitor can’t even fit all of your ship’s modules on the screen! For me, the old sound effects fit in with all of that quite nicely.
I would say that I’d like to see a lot more individual sounds. Like a different sound for safe docking and emcon mode instead of the same ringer. And little tones and dings and other signals for when you get an email, when your batteries are empty and your modules are shutting down, when your jumpdrive or torpedo is fully spun up, when your sensors detect a new unknown signal, etc. Sound-wise, I think the game is a little bland right now. Thank goodness for the music cause otherwise it would be dead silent most of the time.
