So Elissa and I had to submit a milestone the other day and decided that while we were testing the build by playing it from the start, we might as well live-tweet the playlets sessions (we were each live-tweeting our own playlists). I've grabbed all the tweets from both play tests to share with you here as well.
(Read each play sesstion bottom-to-top, they're in reverse chronological order):
Leigh in Space @leighformayor
Thanks for indulging me everyone!
Not too badly actually. A few scratches, but otherwise fine. I've made it to my shadey deal and I think this is where I'll call lunch break.
Sold water at Cassini. Carruther's Circle next stop. It's gonna be asteroid city. Let's see how much damage I manage to take.
It's easy money and will only add another minute or two to my journey.
Ok have arrived at Lagrange and made a little money, but tempted to take a short water contract which will make me miss the jumpgate again.
Heh. While en route in Emcon to Lagrange I saw a pirate with his back to me. Came out of Emcon for five seconds to recharge a bit. Unseen.
Turns out Lagrange and Halley are a few minutes past the Carruther's Circle jumpgate. But no matter. The guy didn't time limit this job.
Crap! Forgot to repair my stern and wing. Will do it at Lagrange.
Nice! Cayeux Station had a contract going to Lagrange AND a passenger going to Halley. They both orbit the same planet! Too easy!
Have decided since it's almost directly en route to stop off at Cayeux Station. Try my luck at contracts going to Sagan's or Carruther's.
thud Ok, I gotta tweet less and play more. I just went straight through an small asteroid belt. Caught two of them. Wing and stern damage.
Ok, totally safe passage out of Leo. One pirate detected, but it was ages away. Sure would be good to have cargo though.
You know what's a dead giveaway that you're looking at some kind of space anomaly and not a pirate ship? When it passes THROUGH a star.
Ok, I've taken this gig and am making my way back to the jumpgate to Tega. It's one jump to Sagan's Lights, then another to Carruther's.
It's ages away, but pays very well, and I don't need to actually handle any illicit goods myself. Plus, the goods are legal in that system.
Ok very few contracts going FROM anywhere in Leo, but there is a guy here asking me to go broker a kind of shady deal in Carruther's Circle.
Gonna have to turn it down, I still don't have a jump drive so I'm gonna have to stay within the jumpgate network for now.
Checking my messages. In amongst various contract notifications from my recent work is a request to pick up a passenger in The Two Sisters.
Hmm. No grappling arm for sale in Crassus. Point defence system maybe? Or save my money?
Ah, friendly system with merchants and authority vessels and from what I can tell, no nearby pirates.
Full circle, I'm taking industrial parts back to Crassus Harbour in Leo. With a bit of luck I might be able to afford a grappling arm there.
Ok, back in turf I know in Tega. Back at Sterling Industrial now, let's see what they've got.
No contract available at the station I was at in Maru, so I'm heading back to Tega - familiar ground.
Made 300 bucks from the eva suit run. Spent 250 on asteroid repairs and 22 on using the jump gate. Not my finest hour.
Ok, light damage to my bow, port wing and primary hull. Physical damage only, my ship's systems are all fine. Short easy trip to my target.
Man, these eva suits better be worth it.
Ok, safely made it past five (!!!) pirates to get to the Maru jumpgate. Will survey asteroid damage once I'm on the other side.
Ok I've let my whole battery drain so I can stay silent, but had to drift through the asteroid belt. Copped at least three nicks. Ouch.
But I can't change course or they'll see me...
Double crap. I'm currently a silent rock drifting through a crowd of THREE pirate ships and WAY closer to an asteroid belt than I'd like.
Crap. Pirate detected lurking right near the star. Was already running dark, but my course it gonna take me too close for comfort.
This route is gonna take me right past the star in Leo. I'm too lazy to put more distance between me and it, so I'll be mindful of my temp.
Ok, found another job at Penitent Commercial space station taking 22 crates of eva suits to the Maru system. One jump away. Should be fine.
Emptied my bank account. Bought five. But this launcher was super cheap. Maybe it's nerfed in some other way. Or needs rebalancing.
Woah, I thought there was a bug which let me buy more torps than I had tubes, but nope, this weapon system can carry 7 damn torpedoes!
Ok, bought myself an SPL-6S weapons launcher. Went to also by torpedoes, but I hadn't plugged the new module in yet so it didn't work.
Awesome first trip. Made over a grand! Zero passengers or contracts here at Crassus though. May buy m'self something nice.
Jumpgate put me just a couple of minutes out from my destination: Crassus Harbour. Pay day!
Hmm... they're hovering nearby. I've got half my battery left. Jumpgate to Leo is near. Still should be ok...
One pirate detected, but aaaages away near the twin stars in Tega. I've gone silent, I don't think they'll spot me at this range.
So far so good, nothing but the clouds.
Ok, I decided not to spend any of my starting money on any defensive capabilities, so I'm risking the trip to Leo defenceless.
Nice! Got a contract going to the exact same space station as my passenger. Two for one!
Ok I'm at Sterling Industrial and there's a guy here wanting a lift to the Leo system. I'll say yes and see if any contracts go there too.
I think I need to clean the little grey spots off my monitor. Hard to tell which asteroids are real and which are dirty spots.
We temporarily have the game starting with contracts available from every company/govt in the game. This won't be the case in the full game.
Alright I'm in Tega, a manufacturing and mining central system. Am makin my way to Sterling Industrial space station to look for contracts.
Alright, starting a dual live-tweet of @objectsgame with @expectproblems. Check it out. #gamedev #IndieGameDev #indiegames
4) Fuck Caruthers’ Circle. Sideways. With an M-12 heavy-weight anti-shipping torpedo.
3) Re-doing the way ship system logs are stored / shown IS a good plan. Glad it’s on the books for this coming month.
2) There’s a rendering bug with very large ship identification names. May tweak the layout of the sensor screen.
1) That “many passengers spawning” bug still happens on Cayeux for some reason.
Learnings from this play session:
PHEW. Well. Anyway. That’s done.
Whelp! Game crashed. 2 hours. Not a bad run. Tends not to happen these days… Time to figure out what this crash was and fix it...
YES! I’M BACK! weeps I never thought I’d be so happy to see Port Crawford.
Syncing magnetic jump locks and…
Right. I’m back at the jumpgate. From there, through Sagan’s Lights, and then we NEVER SPEAK OF THIS AGAIN.
I’m not TOTALLY boned, but I’m blacklisted from a sector so I’m basically scarpering further north where nobody knows me.
In future, I might return here… ONLY if I can get a point defence laser module. They can help protect your ship from asteroids.
But I’m kinda boned in Sagan’s Lights, as that’s a Ulence Federation system. So… heading north to Leo, I guess.
Whelp, I’ve officially lost 400 credits trying to make money from this gods-awful system. I’mma get out of here.
New plan: take a contact out of this system and pretend this debacle NEVER HAPPENED.
Oh, good. I got an email saying I failed the contract. I took too long. DAMNIT, ASTEROIDS!
Yeah it's a bastard of a system. Takes forever to get anywhere with all those asteroids, but the contracts pay accordingly.
I am now slowly crawling around yet more asteroid fields to drop off this passenger AND my cargo.
Solid job, Elissa. That’s the entire profit of this run gone. golf clap
I begrudgingly boarded another passenger, heading to Jansky mining station. Need to make SOME money here...
My passenger disembarked. I was closer to his destination than mine. sigh Time to check the damage.
Oh, good. Don’t worry, I’m sure being hit by 8-9 planetesimals will just buff RIGHT out.
Oh fuck. Medium damage to the bow. That was a big one.
YES! THE TORPEDO GOT KILLED BY AN ASTEROID! IT WENT OFF PREMATURELY!
Minor damage to the stern.
And now to the hull.
WHUMP. asteroid hit me. DAMNIT.
Shit. Shit. Shit. Torpedo on my trail. Not much I can do.
No weapon system. No countermeasures. I am BONED. Time to do the only thing I can: enter the asteroid field.
SHIT! He’s firing a torp at me.
Hint: it rhymes with “irate”.
Uh-oh. Guess who found me punting around out here and is heading right for me?
On the bright side, I now mapped like 3/4 of this shithole.
I am never coming to Carruther’s Circle again. This is a shit sector. I expect a bonus for this contract for having to come here.
I can just imagine the passenger going, “why has it taken us 7 months to get to the destination?”
Me: “Because I am very smart and wise."
OMG MORE ASTEROIDS. Fuck this sector.
Hey, @leighformayor, you designed a real shit sector in Carruther’s Circle. It’s the space version of thick Aussie bush. SO thorny and shit.
Right now I wish some sagely old freighter captain had given me the advice, “When you jump into the Circle, ALWAYS HEAD WEST TO START."
Omfg. This system blows.
Oh balls. This is a HUGE asteroid belt. I wish I had a star map of this region.
I’ve chosen south, as I hate re-treading my previous path.
My choice is: plot a course back the way I came, or risk the long way around south.
Oh, crud. This sector is a mess. Asteroids everywhere. I think I’ve gone the wrong way.
Shit. Asteroid belt just got detected. I’m altering course. Guess Lassel isn’t that close after all.
Once again, the passenger has a lower priority than my precious cargo.
Lassel is down south, and close, so I’m heading there first.
Jump complete! Time for the Battlestar Galactica gold clap!
“Non-contact stability clamps engaged.”
And we’re ready to pay our creds and jump to the Circle.
But JUST to be safe, I’m going to use my new battery to run silent between the nebula and the jumpgate.
He’s some distance, and going the wrong way. Sorry, buddy, you missed me! Sucks to be you! Pirate elsewhere!
WHOOP! That is NOT a sensor ghost. “New contact, no IFF transponder, bearing 189."
Between Halley and the jumpgate is a dark nebula. This is good. It obfuscates my signal for most of the trip. Safer if nobody sees you...
I’m still in major trade lanes, though, so I’m moderately safe.
Aaaand I’m back in course. I don’t anticipate trouble but I’m watching for signal that may be a pirate patrolling near the jumpgate.
Whoops. I just mashed the “RCS Fire Clockwise” button. Ahem. Competent Captain here, defs.
On my way to the jumpgate. Going to run dark with my new battery to see how long I can manage it. So far? Much better.
It’s not a rim sector, but it’s close. As close as I’ll get to uncharted territory until I get a jumpdrive.
Caruther’s Circle is down south-west. It’s the extremity of the jumpgate network. A mining system.
Pod bought, cargo loaded, “Hugo Brick” is making himself comfy in my spare cabin, and… avante!
But a basic pod isn’t expensive. Like, 100c I think. I’ll buy one now. Had to happen eventually.
Problem is this: I can carry 20 computers in my existing pod. I need a second one to carry all 26.
Hrm, actually… it’s quite a trek, but there’s a contract for 26 computers going to Lassel in Caruther’s Circle. Once again… close enough?
Hrm. Right. So. Passengers here are going to Carruther’s Circle and Maru. I doubt I’ll get contracts to either, but we’ll see.
Golf clap, Elissa. Golf clap.
Hauling the radioactive waste was pointless. Neither station wants it. I was able to offload it for the same price I bought it for.
Aw, nice. My passenger emailed me to say thanks. “As agreed, I’ve transferred you the 81c.”
Uber, but for beat up space freighters.
The annoying thing about short hops is you still pay the docking fee at each station. It’s like 12-13c, but still annoying.
Right. Time for the staggeringly short hop to Halley Industrial.
I’ll just NOT tell my passenger what she’s riding next to. Ahem.
Hey, it’s her fault for travelling merchant-ship class!
Time to drop off my passenger at Halley Industrial. There’s no contract to go there, but I might haul some radioactive waste seeing as I can
“CALLING ALL TRADERS WITH PASSENGER CAPACITY!”
No, sir, I am not schlepping out to Atea Kanada. Not in this bucket of bolts.
Nice to know, but it’s automated junk. However, there is an email titled, “Paid Work!”
IS IT SPAM? Let’s see...
“Ulence Federation” and the “Bello Shipping Company” were emailing me with thanks for my work on contracts for them. Woo?
Time to fire up the ‘ole MAIL.EXE program to see who’s blathering at me.
Sync’ing comms is fun.
Oh, cool. I just passed through my comms room and noticed I have 2 emails in the queue reading to be pushed out. Synchronising comms.
That’s a HUGE difference to my ship’s battery power. Before I had 3x 25mw storage, now I’ve got 3x25mw + 1x50mw storage. Almost double.
Done! I just ducked back into my ship. I’ve connected the T-100.
Oh fuck it. Buying a T-100. YAY T-100!
Oh! They DO have a Beamont T-100 battery in stock. That’s good. The old workhorse. But it’s… 2400c. I have 3043c. Hrm.
And THEN I’ll head to Halley Industrial to drop off my doubtlessly-bored passenger.
Woo! 195c for this contract. Let’s see if I can buy a new battery to slot in here…
Not being able to effectively run dark for long is like a submarine not being able to submerge for long. It’s bad.
Out of curiosity, I’m going to see if any batteries are on sale here, because buying a new battery may be a priority.
I have only 3 batteries, and they’re GG8 models. Those things are shiiiiiiit. Each one has just half the storage of a T-100, which I prefer.
With reactor off, batteries alone give me maybe 20 seconds of EMCON (Emissions Control) time. That’s… bad.
Hrm. So. I just made the call to run dark for a bit as I was drifting close to a possible contact.
Protecting her shipping lanes by her government probably takes less effort.
Passing me is an Akula-class gunboat. Smaller than a cutter, which makes sense - Sagan’s Lights isn’t as industrial / monied.
Cassini is the only planet where an attempt at terraforming has begun in this cluster. A news article I saw indicated it was not going well.
To port as I head south is the Cassini Terraforming Station. So named because it’s the orbital platform above Cassini.
Fortunately, I lucked out. Halley Industrial and Lagrange are both ports in orbit of the same planet.
Alright. We’re here. This sector is BUSY. Much traffic.
Anyway, doesn’t matter. We’re docked with the jumpgate. Time to pay our money and rip through spacetime. Fun!
There’s some comms chatter going on between nearby merchants. But they’re far enough away that it’s garbled.
Hmm no. His course makes no sense. I’m betting he’s a ghost.
Either that’s a sensor ghost (my sensor suite is cheap) or a pirate just went dark and is sneaking on up to me.
Uh-oh. I picked up a contact briefly, heading toward me, then it went dead.
(And asteroid belts. The odds of surviving an asteroid belt are 725 to 1. Not hat anyone ever tells me the odds.)
Right, so the jumpgate is south-west. I haven’t mapped that area precisely, so I’m going to manually fly so I can correct to avoid nebulae.
Close enough. I’ll take her there and eat the extra docking costs.
Right, as I’m heading to Sagan’s Lights I’ve picked up a passenger heading there. She’s not going to Lagrange, but Halley Industrial…
Damn. What a backwater. Only one contract - clothing to Lagrange Port, which is one system further south on the network, in Sagan’s Lights.
120 credits for this contract. It hasn’t earned back the cost of upgrading my cargo pod yet. Might find another contract here.
Hah. 111 passengers available here. scribbles that she’s replicated bug #48
This was a very short run, which means it won’t earn me much money.
But I’m too far away to care even if he’s a menace. Docking time!
Hrm. I’ve had a random contact from a nebula nearby. It COULD be a sensor ghost, or a pirate raider.
Alright, passed the asteroid belt, and I’ve made a turn and plotted a course for Cayeux Station.
The other is shinier than mine. A Leander-class freighter called the "Concord".
Two have IFF transponders on - the Catherine J Wilson is another Ceres, a MkII this time, heading towards sector C.
Hrm. I’ve got three contacts nearby.
A direct path would put me through the asteroid belt, and I don’t want any dinks, dents or scratches on this turdbucket.
Right, so, Cayeux is to the north, in Quadrant A. I’ve made a burn to pass by an asteroid field.
Airlocks sealed, undocking permission paid for - time to leave.
Right. Cargo stowed. I’ve used the terminal in the docking port to request undocking permission. Time to find Cayeux Station…
I paid a couple hundred of my shiny space-bucks to upgrade my existing pod with shielding. The 18t should fit in that single cargo pod okay.
Oh darn. I just realised this cargo requires shielded cargo pods. I only have a standard one.
Okay, there’s a contract to ship 18t of explosives to Cayeux Station, also here in this sector.
Either way, no passengers for me. Time to look at contracts.
(In the real game Two Sisters and Parssus have no jumpgate, but we did a small test there and jumpgate-connected them for it.)
We’re at Tega, in the centre of the jumpgate network. We can pay to move about there, even sans jump drive.
Sorry Ron, no passage for you. Come back one week.
Oh DAMNIT. Salo station is in Parssus, a sort of out-of-the-way sector not on the jumpgate network… and I have no jump drive.
He’s “Ray” Swanson, but I’m pretending he’s Ron Swanson anyway.
LOL! “R. Swanson” is looking for passage to Salo station. I might see if I can give ‘ole Ron a lift.
Okay, first up: there are two passengers seeking destinations here. I might see if I can get a contract that matches up.
It advertises my own ship, the Ceres III as “a mechanic’s dream”.
…I feel personally attacked.
There’s an in-universe ad on a billboard some of you may know as the flier we did for Objects in Space.
To leave my ship, I have to open both the interior and exterior airlock doors, then click to go through.
I’m disembarking my ship and heading first of all to the trading centre. (as some of this is temp art I won’t be posting many screens)
Docking process begun! Arms out, connection established… aaaand we’re docked. Welcome to Port Crawford.
Passing nearby is the Pembroke, a Kyushu-class cutter used as a patrol vessel. It’s patrolling for pirates, no doubt.
I’ve plotted a course and we’re underway.
To the south is an asteroid field, and south-west beyond it is Port Crawford, a trading outpost. I’m going to head there as it’s closest.
I’m driving the obligatory Ceres MkIII light freighter. It’s a shitbox, but it’s easy to repair and cheap to get (relatively).
So! Here begins my live-tweet of a test session of @objectsgame. May it be free of bugs I have to stop and fix.
Okay, so @leighformayor and I are going to independently live tweet our test sessions of @objectsgame.
