I thought some users might be interested in and earlier control panel build that I made for Elite Dangerous.
I hacked together some bits and pieces of other tech, with a joystick --> keyboard USB interface board designed for use with MAME cabinets.
The physical base for my controls is actually a cheape generic laptop cooling stand. It had a nice shape and the metal mesh was meant to be easy to cut out for switches etc (in the end that was a pain)
I used a breakout cable from some old video/audio gear which had plenty of wires available for me to make my custom cord, and I housed the interface board in a ‘black box’ I scrounged from somewhere.
The nice thing about this build is that it is simply a USB keyboard as far as the PC is concerned, and it is very easy to program each switch to a key without needing an Arduino or similar.
Obviously, that also means you lose some of the cool feature slight LED lights, fans and such, but it complemented by Saitek setup very well. I’m planning to repurpose it, or perhaps even rebuild some of it to play Objects In Space.
The basic layout without labels or cabling done: (Please excuse the alignment of buttons! drilling holes in mesh isn’t ideal)
