Speaking as a new player, I’m finding it VERY hard to make progress in Objects in Space. The setbacks I’ve encountered, so far, have been enough to (in my opinion) warrant deleting the savefile and starting over from scratch, and that’s severely dampening my enthusiasm for the game.
Granted, there are complicating factors here that are strictly code bugs or design bugs: the game crashing on a regular basis, a negotiation option in the “I’ve got 1000 units of Sand to unload” quest being scripted wrong, and Time Compression not being reliable when absolutely nothing is threatening me.
But, there are also design issues that aren’t bugs but are points for concern: the lack of ability to hail the nearby cops for help when I get threatened by a pirate (or spot a ship with IFF off), getting waylaid by a pirate on my very first interstellar cargo run when I can NOT afford any defenses or weapons, difficulty in figuring out the prices of various goods in various ports, travel being interminably slow, Time Compression not going above x4, and so on.
Save scrumming, as much as it might ruin the tension, is currently making the difference between “this is hard, but I can get a handle on this” and “I am getting nowhere”.
